INFO Web Resources

Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code is a lightweight but powerful source code editor that is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. In the Spring of 2022, the INFO department decided to recommend using Visual Studio Code rather than Notepad++. The software available on campus computers and on the INFO Desktop available through Citrix, available at https://mycloud.mccneb.edu, will contain these programs. So we recommend you download and use these programs on your local computer.

Please download and install the version of Visual Studio Code that is compatible with your operating System.

     Download Visual Studio Code

After Visual Studio Code is installed, you may want to view a couple of YouTube videos to you get oriented to the environment. Here are a couple of videos that we recommend:

There are also several introductory videos available on the VScode web site located at https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/introvideos.

Extensions

As the Extensions video explains, VScodes' extensions allow you to add additional tools and functionality to the editor. The VScode extensions are available for download from the Visual Studio Marketplace.  The VScode User Guide may be helpful if you want to learn more about extension. Both of these resources are linked below:

We recommend that you install the extensions listed below. There may be more extensions required in the various INFO classes, but this is a good starting point.

Please install the following VScode extensions:

 Emmet

Emmet is a plugin available for many popular text editors which greatly improves HTML & CSS workflow. Support for Emmet snippets and expansion is built right into Visual Studio Code, no extension required. Learning just a little about Emmet will save you time and also make you more productive.
