A Winter Count is Native American artistic tradition that has deep roots in the Great Plains. It began among the Lakota people who call them "waniyetu wowapi". These rich graphical pieces are histories or calendars which document the happenings from first snowfall to first snowfall, hence the word "Winter Count".
This Buffalo Robe Project is the work of an art history class from Metropolitan Community College, which explores Omaha's history, as well as that of our nation, through this Omaha artistic tradition.
