After Wounded Knee

The 2nd Infantry was sent to Pine Ridge after Wounded Knee. The Wounded Knee massacre occurred on December 29, 1890. Fear of the newly-practiced ceremony dubbed the “Ghost Dance” by whites, the US cavalry attempted to disarm the Sioux. Over 150 Lakota men, women, and children lay dead and over 50 more wounded when US soldiers intercepted a group of 38 Hunkpapa after they were transported to Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
