INFO 1311: HTML/XHTML

Assignment 2 - Adding Links to Your Web Pages (50 points)

  1. Create the following HTML page using a text editor. Name the file resource.htm and save it in a folder named module2 or week. The <title> of the page should be "Assignment 2 -- Web Resources". Each of the items in the bullet list represent links to remote Web sites. The URLs for the links are listed below the illustration. Use a mailto link for the name in the last paragraph using the Email address which is listed below.  Your code must validate as an XHTML 1.0 transitional file. Don't forget to validate your page using the W3C Validator tool.

These are the URLs that you should use when creating the links:

W3C Schools http://www.w3schools.com/
Digital Web Magazine http://www.digital-web.com/
Web Page Design for Designers http://www.wpdfd.com/
SitePoint http://www.sitepoint.com/
CSS Zen Garden http://www.csszengarden.com/
Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Quick Tips http://www.w3.org/WAI/quicktips/
Web Standards Project http://www.webstandards.org/
Student Name (Replace with your first and last name) Your e-mail address

  1. Be sure to preview your page in the browser and test your links. However, do not send an email message when testing the MAILTO link.
  2. When your assignment is complete and ready to be graded, you will need to "turn it in" by uploading it to your Web site on the Metro server and by providing a link to it from your INFO1311 home page (default.htm). Using FTP, connect to your Web site and upload your folder named module2 or week2 that contains the file named resource.htm.
  3. Locate your INFO1311 Home Page, default.htm, that you created in Assignment 1. Open it in a text editor and make the following changes to the page:
    1. Create a link from the text Assignment 2--Web Resources to the resource.htm file that is located in the module2 or week2 folder.
    2. Under Important Links make each of the list items a link using the following URLs:

      On-Campus Course Web Site http://www.mccinfo.net/info1311
      Online Course Web Site http://angel.mccneb.edu
      W3C (X)HTML Validator http://validator.w3.org/
      Metro Web Site http://www.mccneb.edu

  4. Save these changes to the default.htm file and upload the revised file to the server placing it in the top level folder. It will replace the copy of the original file that is still on the server.
  5. Open your revised INFO1311 Home Page that you uploaded to the server in the browser and test your link to your Web Resources Homework Assignment.

When Finished...

On-campus Students:  Open your revised INFO1311 Home Page that you uploaded to the server in the browser and test your link to your Web Resources Homework Assignment. Print the resource.htm page from the browser and from the text editor. You will hand in the printout from the browser so I can see how it "looks".  You will also hand in the printout from the text editor so that I can check your HTML source code.

Online Students: Open your revised INFO1311 Home Page that you uploaded to the server in the browser and test your link to your Web Resources Homework Assignment. That's it!
